To Justify War
Hugo Grotius´ Theorical Approaches Current in XXI Century

War is a global and historical phenomenon that has been interpreted from various points of view in
order to restrict the use of unjustified armed violence. That is why this paper intends to manifest the
main notions of the dutch jurist Hugo Grotius that has been considered current in these days about
the so called “right to war” (ius ad bellum), that may enlight the issue to get a better design of
international securuty systems that allow a greater social and political stability. The main contributions
of Grotius are considered here and the arguments that promote a more concrete vision of the issue of
war justification are discussed, especially in the aspects concerning to a classical tradition recived
by Grotius. It´s concluded that injury, concept widely analyzed by him, is the main tool to solve the
controversy of distinction between just and unjust wars and the rightful use of violence.
